Antique Sewing Machine: Singer’s History

If we are going to talk about antique sewing machine, we better start off by tracing the history of Singer, the most renowned sewing machine manufacturer worldwide. Singer was founded by Isaac M. Singer during the time when the machine was very expensive for common household to afford. It happened in 1856.

By 1870s, Singer established several factories in different countries like the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and Russia. The popularity of the sewing machines manufactured by the Singer Manufacturing Company was so meteoric that in most countries, the word “sewing machine” is equated with “Singer”.

Because of the worldwide recognition of Singer sewing machines, many manufacturers in the United States and Europe started to pirate different models of Singer. Although they did not labeled their sewing machines with “Singer” on them, these clones were almost the same as Singer models in terms of shape, performance and size. However, even if the imitations had penetrated the market, Singer still reigns as the world’s best sewing machine for over 150 years. The older versions of the machine are still functional and can still help you embroider, quilt or just sew the loose fabric on your favorite shirt.
