I am primarily a self-taught artist, although I have been the beneficiary of my daughter's art school education have drawn on the expertise and inspiration of friends and family. I developed a sense of color and form through the textile arts including weaving and basketry. My immersion in the Dada movement helped me learn not to take myself too seriously and to appreciate art in the ordinary. For many years I have used art as a process for self therapy and it is often informed by my Authentic Movement experience. More recently I have focused on mixed media work, enjoying the process of bringing objects, images and paint together.
When I discovered encaustic a few years ago, I knew I had finally found my true medium. The process of using encaustic involves layering beeswax and damar resin with oil stick, images and objects and working the surface by gouging, pressing and heating. Usining these materials takes me to another realm beyond mind or ego where each step is a surprise as "accidents" occur. It's a process that involves entering the land of not knowing, letting go of the outcome.
I like to enter the studio with an attitude of adventure and curiosity. I usually have a couple of pieces going at once and especially like working on small pieces as the creative process seems more accessible this way...and the art, being small, is more affordable, allowing anyone to own a piece of original work. For me, the idea of working small started with Mail Art, evolved into art postcards and holiday cards and now often takes the form of postcard sized encaustic pieces.
